A Leader Must See...FARTHER, MORE & BEFORE
On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it that the Leader be a person of Vision? (1=not important. 10= extremely important.)
On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your ability as a Leader to cast and hold a Vision? (1=not important. 10= extremely important.)
The vast majority of the requests that I receive are from leaders looking for help with vision-casting. Today’s leaders are realizing the importance of being able to cast a vision, while also recognizing their own limitations in this area. John Maxwell, writing about vision-casting, states that a leader must see… Farther than others see. More than others see. Before others see.
How can you see Farther, More & Before? In addition to hiring a coach, consider the following steps could you take today (this week):
- Take a personal or team retreat. A half day. Whole day. Or more. Find a place where you can get away from the regular interruptions and dream, imagine, write, pray. It’s incredible the benefits of regular uninterrupted time.
- Envision the BIG picture. Do your best to see the whole journey. Start to finish. See a clear picture of the solution and end results. Write it down. Be specific.
- Don’t stop with the solution, identify the SHIFT. What’s the larger transition that’s happening? Focusing exclusively on a solution is similar to plugging holes in a dam that’s about to break. Yes, you need an immediate solution. But you need more.
- Hang out with 20/20 Friends. Who helps you get clear about what you want? Who has, time and time again, helped you stay focused? Identify those individuals’ who help you think and act creatively. These are your 20/20 Friends. Intentionally spend time with them.
